If you’re looking for a quick fix for a cold room without having to spend a ton of money then one thing you could consider is the use of radiator panels. A lot of houses lose heat out from the walls and ceilings (as well as the windows) simply because the flow of heat from the radiators is badly thought out. Simply by fixing this small problem most houses and larger properties could save more than 20% of their heating costs every year.

This can be done by reflecting heat from radiators back into the room rather than wasting it. The new Heatkeeper raditator panels, which promise a 20% reduction in heating costs, have been accredited via the energy regulator Ofgem and are a worthwhile investment for any home. The Heatkeeper panels are cost-effective, east to install PVC metallised sheets that you insert inserted behind radiators and then secure through the use of strong self-adhesive tape. Their patented tooth-saw design causes special convection currents, which will improve the circulation of warm air in the room and will help to prevent heat loss through the walls and the ceilings. In turn, infrared heat will also be reflected back to the radiator so that water then returns to the boiler even hotter, leading to a more efficient boiler usage and significantly lower fuel costs. A pack of five will cost you £24.50.

If you want to restore old painted beams back to their former glory it is now possible to do it without stripping back the wood or damaging the environment, thanks to a new solution based process that has been developed by UK company Renaissance Beams.

Thanks to the new process old homes, including listed buildings, can be given their own eco-friendly makeover thanks to this new and innovative process that will transform black timber (as well as other kinds of timber) beams back to their natural wood colour. Chemical stripping or sandblasting – which causes damage to timber and is not allowed in listed buildings and homes – has previously been the only available technique for stripping back painted beams.

However now the ‘back from black’ process which was developed by Renaissance Beams is able to use a water-based solution to give the appearance of old and natural timber. The solution, which the company are keeping as a ‘well kept secret’ can be applied both to matt or glossy painted beams. As well as this it can be applied to stained or varnished surfaces and can be used to give darker wood a lighter finish.

Alex is a financial journalist and occasional design writer. He loves writing about home renovation and interior design but spends most of his days writing about mortgages, credit cards and payday loans .

If you are fan of House Hunters International, (and let’s face it, who isn’t?,) then you enjoy watching hopeful home buyers examining their many choices in exotic or foreign locations. Many times, they have to consider not only budgetary concerns, but also their aesthetic preferences as they visit house after house in search of that special somewhere they will eventually call their own. Some people, when visiting an unfamiliar property or house, find that they are easily distracted by the way things are at the moment they arrive. They might not be able to see the potential of a room, for example, because of a hideous shade of 1970s shag carpet still menacing the floor or the outdated wallpaper or color scheme found in other rooms of the home. They sometimes don’t go into the looking phase of their decision with the right combination of imagination and common sense, just as we don’t when considering a home purchase in our own areas of the world. The biggest thing a person can do really is to not be afraid of putting their own colors up once they get into that dream home. Color on walls can do one of two things: date a house (badly) or update a house! Using it to your advantage and being able to imagine it beforehand can make a huge difference in the way you view a potential home. You have to be able to look past what is there, and look towards what you want to be there. Thanks to home improvement specialty stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot, people can try out different color schemes using computer software modeling systems located in the store, or can purchase inexpensive CD or DVD copies of software that lets one try out different types of interior design. Not only is this a lot of fun, but it also helps break the monotony of the tendency many people have to seek out traditional, bland wall colors such as eggshell or off white, or beige. On a computer program you can paint the walls any color you like and see what it will look like finished without ever having to apply a coat of paint. You can even mock up images of your furniture, to see how it would look inside the rooms before you commit to any color patterns. Life can be very good for interior design when you have the right tools.

Still selling in large numbers to this day, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman were first launched in 1956 after having been in development for years by Charles and Ray Eames. They became instant design classics and were the first chairs that the Eames brothers designed for the higher end of the market. They were made of leather and molded plywood and examples of the originals can now be found in the Permanent Collection at the New York MOMA.

The chairs are put together using three plywood curved shells – in the original chairs the shells were constructed using Brazilian rosewood veneers which were glued together from five layers of plywood – the modern chairs use 7 thin layers which are glued together under heat and pressure.

The chairs first drew attention when they appeared on the Arlene Francis Home Show in 1956 and have been popular ever since. Since being introduced by the furniture company Herman Miller in America in the late fifties they have been in production constantly ever since. These days there are a number of copies that are on the market – some are direct knockoffs and others claim to be just ‘influenced’ by the originals. Either way there can be no doubt that the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is an interior design classic.

The are many ways you can update your home some can be costly while others hard cost anything at all. A good thing to do first is to invest in some quality furniture. A chesterfield sofa will instantly give your room a sense of class. Furniture like this will last a life time if you look after it correctly, which means allow it may seem costly at first in the long run you are going to get your moneys worth from it.

When it comes to changing your room you can simply change the cushions to match the colour scheme or add a throw. When buying the furniture for your room it is best to buy something neutral so that any colour scheme will match. If your room is fairly small don’t over power it with accessories as it will only make the room look smaller. However if you are lucky enough to have a big room you could get a few accessories that will give your room some personality.

People often spend more time choosing living room or dining room furniture than they spend selecting bedroom furniture. The reason for this may be that they expect the living room and dining room to be seen more by visitors. The one fact that they fail to consider is that their entire day can be affected by the quality of sleep they get each night. For children and adults, the bedroom is their personal space. It should be a place designed for relaxation.

The bed is usually the focal point of any bedroom. Everyone wants an attractive and a comfortable bed in their bedroom. The size of the bed affects the level of comfort for those using it. If two people are sharing a bed, the bed needs to be large enough for both people to have enough space to move around comfortably. Of course, you will also have to consider how the size of the bed affects the flow of traffic in the room. Both sides of the bed need to be easily accessible. Choosing a large bed may mean that you need to limit the number of accessory pieces you include in the room. The height of the bed is also a factor to consider when choosing a bed.

The actual components of the bed play a large role in its comfort level. You should spend a considerable amount of time selecting the most comfortable mattress. The firmness of the mattress can determine how well you sleep at night and how rested your body feels in the morning. A memory foam mattress is often an ideal choice for a bed that two people share. A mattress that contours to each person’s body shape and temperature is a popular choice as are pillow top mattresses. The thickness of the mattress is a factor to consider when buying bedding ensembles.

The mattress is one component of the bed where you should spend as much money as your budget allows to buy the best mattress for your situation. Another component of the bed where you should not skimp on quality is the pillows. Memory foam pillows are a popular choice. The size and firmness of the pillow is an individual choice but should definitely be a pillow that provides your head and neck the maximum amount of comfort.

The outer covering of your bed affects the overall attractiveness of the bedroom. You may want to choose ensembles for your bedroom furniture that correspond to your home decor or bed sets that are seasonally appropriate. The comfort level of your bed is directly affected by the type of sheets and coverings you select. Flannel sheets, cotton sheets, organic sheets, and satin sheets are just a few material options you have to select from. In order for your bed to look good and for you to sleep comfortably, the sheets must fit the bed properly. Sheets that slide around or bunch up are unattractive and uncomfortable.

For the more romantic households, February can mean an influx of colour as Valentine’s Day flowers brighten up the home and add uplifting greenery to any room.
But so many of us allow our Valentine’s Day gifts to hide on the kitchen windowsill or in a conservatory, missing out on the huge potential of these welcome gifts to add colourful flourishes to our rooms.

If your partner is kind enough to buy you roses this year, there are hundreds of wonderful ways to use their iconic looks to decorate your home. For example, take an elegant glass bowl or a large vase, fill it with water and scatter rose petals around floating scented candles to achieve an exceptional sensory focal point for your living room or bedroom.
Roses can also look spectacular when arranged with fruit, to create a delectable centrepiece for the kitchen. Simply arrange apples, peaches, oranges, pears and grapes in porcelain bowl or vase and insert the roses in between the fruit. To create an overflowing effect, try placing florists foam in the bottom of the bowl and use wood picks to attach the fruit to the foam and give the bowl a more full appearance.

Tulips are popular Valentine’s Day flowers and their vivid colours and charming long stems can make for beautiful arrangements either on their own or with other flowers.
However, it is important to keep in mind that cut tulips will droop, so if you are using them in an arrangement with other flowers, first straighten the stems by rolling them in newspaper and plunging them into cold water. Then pack them tightly in your arrangement.
Alternatively, place your tulips together in their own tall vase, with a wide rim to give them room to move around. Recondition them daily, recutting the stems and changing the water to keep them blooming for as long as possible.

Another elegant way to use your Valentine’s Day gifts is to take smaller flowers from a bouquet and make them a focal point in themselves. Some florists and homeware stores stock test tube-shaped flower vases that can hold just one or two small flowers. Half fill them with water, add a dainty selection of flowers and hang from a mantelpiece or on a wall to create a surprisingly effective look.

Galley kitchens have a particular design and layout. Initially galley kitchens were the kitchens aboard vessels and were usually laid out in an efficient typical style with longitudinal units and overhead cabinets, making the best use of limited space. Today, the term galley kitchen is also used to refer to the design of household kitchens where the units are fitted into a continuous array with no kitchen table.

Browsing through design galleries will provide some useful tips and assist in developing a design and color scheme that will brighten up the limited space of a kitchen galley.
